Hair turning gray

Oh no! my hair is turning gray!
You wake up one morning and look at yourself in the mirror, then you shriek “honeeeeyy…, “ , you’re hubby comes barging in brandishing his newly acquired shotgun, “what’s the matter dear..”, you answered “my hair is turning gray”, your husband chuckled and said..”you’re no longer a spring chicken love, you’re last years spring chicken!”, goes out of the bathroom and went right back to sleep.

Most guys normally don’t care about graying hairs, they simply accept it as a consequence of getting older. Most women would simply panic at the first sight of their graying hairs. If you are in your 50’s that would be normal, but if you start seeing gray hairs when you’re in your 20’s or 30’s then its about time you press the panic button and start researching why it’s happening to you.

Wash away your gray? Maybe. A team of European scientists have finally solved a mystery that has perplexed humans throughout the ages: why we turn gray. Despite the notion that gray hair is a sign of wisdom, these researchers show that wisdom has nothing to do with it.

Going gray is caused by a massive build up of hydrogen peroxide due to wear and tear of our hair follicles. The peroxide winds up blocking the normal synthesis of melanin, our hair’s natural pigment.
“Not only blondes change their hair color with hydrogen peroxide,” said Gerald Weissmann, MD, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. “All of our hair cells make a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide, but as we get older, this little bit becomes a lot. We bleach our hair pigment from within, and our hair turns gray and then white. This research, however, is an important first step to get at the root of the problem, so to speak.”

The researchers made this discovery by examining cell cultures of human hair follicles. They found that the build up of hydrogen peroxide was caused by a reduction of an enzyme that breaks up hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen (catalase). They also discovered that hair follicles could not repair the damage caused by the hydrogen peroxide because of low levels of enzymes that normally serve this function (MSR A and B). Further complicating matters, the high levels of hydrogen peroxide and low levels of MSR A and B, disrupt the formation of an enzyme (tyrosinase) that leads to the production of melanin in hair follicles. Melanin is the pigment responsible for hair color, skin color, and eye color. The researchers speculate that a similar breakdown in the skin could be the root cause of vitiligo.

“As any blue-haired lady will attest, sometimes hair dyes don’t quite work as anticipated,” Weissmann added. “This study is a prime example of how basic research in biology can benefit us in ways never imagined.”

Why Hair Turns Gray: Communication Between Hair Follicles and Melanocyte Stem Cells Key to Mystery

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2011) — A new study by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center has shown that, for the first time, Wnt signaling, already known to control many biological processes, between hair follicles and melanocyte stem cells can dictate hair pigmentation.

The study was published in the June 11, 2011 issue of the journal Cell.

The research was led by Mayumi Ito, PhD, assistant professor in the Ronald O. Pereleman Department of Dermatology at NYU Langone. “We have known for decades that hair follicle stem cells and pigment-producing melanocycte cells collaborate to produce colored hair, but the underlying reasons were unknown,” said Dr. Ito. “We discovered Wnt signaling is essential for coordinated actions of these two stem cell lineages and critical for hair pigmentation.” The study suggests the manipulation of Wnt signaling may be a novel strategy for targeting pigmentation such as graying hair. The research study also illustrates a model for tissue regeneration.
“The human body has many types of stem cells that have the potential to regenerate other organs,” said Dr. Ito. “The methods behind communication between stem cells of hair and color during hair replacement may give us important clues to regenerate complex organs containing many different types of cells.”

Using genetic mouse models, researchers were able to examine how Wnt signaling pathways enabled both hair follicle stem cells and melanocyte stem cells to work together to generate hair growth and produce hair color. Research also showed the depletion (or inhibition or abnormal) Wnt signaling in hair follicle stem cells not only inhibits hair re-growth but also prevents melanocytes stem cell activation required for producing hair color. The lack of Wnt activation in melanocyte stem cells leads to depigmented or gray hair.
The study raises the possibility that Wnt signaling is a key pathway for the regulation of melanocyte stem cells and shows how melanocyte behavior is associated with hair regeneration. This insight provides further understanding of diseases in which melanocytes are either appropriately lost such as hair graying or undergo uncontrolled cell growth as in melanoma.

What can you do with your graying locks:

1. You can complain about it to your hubby, your relatives and friends all day long and do nothing about it.
2. You can simply accept the fact that you’re not getting any younger and make the most out of your grey locks. Or;
3. You can find a solution that will cover it up.

Hair relaxers

Although curls are currently back in hair fashion, they have bounced in and out of popularity over the centuries. Meanwhile curly haired folks have been battling their hair since the beginning of time. Of the average 10 personal email from google and yahoo and some text messages we receive everyday, some of the frequently asked questions involve chemical thermal reconditioning, hair straightening and hair relaxing.

For many curlyheads, straighteners and relaxers have resulted in damaged hair or weakened tresses. All of these hair treatments involve altering naturally kinky, curly or wavy hair into straight strands through the use of specific chemicals designed to effectively break the chemical bonds of the hair, destroying the traditional curl or wave patterns.

As you can imagine, any time you apply a chemical strong enough to completely break your genetic hair pattern, it can have other unexpected side effects.

The rebonding handling has given a really genuine welfare to clients who have problems taming their wavy, dense or “large” hair. Hair that is decently rebonded will keep its fluency for a lengthy period of moment. It is simply in the original hair or regrowth region where curls or waves will be seen. Popular though rebonding maybe, the fact remains that hair which has been rebonded or straightened several times, or too previously colored remains weak at its roots.  Rebonding will require much maintenance and security during the next rebonding or straightening handling because of its sensitized and fragile circumstance.

Understanding hair colors

The differences between types of hair color can be difficult to navigate for individuals who have minimal experience with dyes and bleaches.  An all-too-common scenario is when a woman walks into a drugstore, purchases a box of permanent color, and ends up with an unwanted shade. Though the picture on the dye box shows a certain color, it may not appear the same on every woman. Understanding the components of hair dye is vital to a successful coloring job.

Understanding the Different Types of Hair Color

There are four main types of hair dyes, each serving a specific purpose. Your knowledge of these different types is very important when it comes to paralleling your color results with the color on a box of hair dye. The amount of peroxide in a dye, combined with an alkalizing agent, is what serves to make a difference between hair colors. Do note that although ammonia is a common ingredient in many brands of hair color, not all brands use ammonia as an alkalizing agent.
